Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields crowned Miss America 2017

Savvy Shields, of Arkansas, has been crowned Miss America 2017.

The winner of the nationally televised pageant was announced Sunday night.

The outgoing Miss America, Betty Cantrell, placed the crown on the head of her successor.

Shields won the talent competition on the second night of preliminaries with a jazz dance to a song from the TV show “Smash.”

Shields was crowned Miss America 2017 by her predecessor Betty Cantrell, who was representing Georgia when winning last year’s competition. Miss South Carolina Rachel Wyatt was the night’s first runner-up, followed by the second runner-up Miss New York Camille Sims.

The pageant began in Atlantic City in 1921 as a way to extend the summer tourist season beyond Labor Day weekend.
