Gisele Bundchen sparkled in a glittering gown as she walked the runway at the 2016 Olympic opening ceremony in Rio.

The supermodel appeared to walk what looked like the longest catwalk of her life as she strutted the length of the Maracana stadium to the song “Girl from Ipanema”.

Wearing a shimmering metallic dress with a thigh-high split and a long train, the 36-year-old looked stunning as she made her final walk rocking a pair of towering heels – after retiring from the the runway last year.

“This is for sure the longest runway I have ever walked in my life and by far with the most amount of people watching, so it is a little nerve-wracking I must say,” she said.

Looking resplendent in a thigh-split silver sequinned gown created by Alexandre Herchovitch, the Brazilian strutted across the arena to the sound of bossa nova hit “Girl from Ipanema”, watched by 78,000 in the stadium and millions more around the world.

Beams of light emerged on the darkened surface behind her, designed to replicate the most famous creations of legendary Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Earlier in the day, Bundchen, who is married to American football quarterback Tom Brady, posted a message on Instagram with a emotional message for the participants and spectators.

“As I walk down tonight on the longest runway I have ever been on I will be sending out all my love and positivity. I am humbled and honoured to be part of this historic moment for my country,” Bundchen wrote.

Her appearance led to a 1,850% rise in Google searches for the supermodel in just one hour, the search engine said.

She was also the talk of Twitter, where many said she had made walking look like an Olympic event.

Richard Lawson, of Vanity Fair, said: “Gisele literally just walked across the stadium and it was an event.”

“Gisele must be out of breath after that catwalk!” Martha Hunt, a Victoria Secrets model, said.
